This site has a long history of industry and ecology. Read on to learn more.

The Stone that Built the Midwest

The Leathem and Smith Quarry in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, was a significant supplier of limestone and crushed stone for various construction projects across the Midwest.

The quarry's products were instrumental in building harbors along Lake Michigan, with millions of tons used for harbor improvements. Additionally, the stone was utilized in constructing roads, railroad beds, and concrete structures.

Notably, the stone formed the foundation of Chicago's Lake Shore Drive and its waterfront seawall. The quarry's strategic location along Green Bay facilitated efficient shipment of these materials to various destinations via the Great Lakes.

A Stage Carved by Time

The Old Stone Quarry rises from the shores of Green Bay just north of Sturgeon Bay, where 800 feet of limestone bluff form a natural amphitheater unlike anywhere else in Door County.

Panoramic water views stretch across the bay. A pair of peregrine falcons nests in the rock face above. Towering cliffs, open sky, and a Wisconsin sunset over the water set the stage for an unforgettable night of music.

The Edge of the Peninsula

The Old Stone Quarry sits at one of Door County's most spectacular vantage points, perched at the mouth of Sturgeon Bay where it opens into the wide expanse of Green Bay.

Limestone bluffs frame water that stretches to the horizon. Forests of birch and maple roll inland to the east. As the sun drops over the bay, the sky and water turn gold, and the cliffs catch fire in the last light of day.

An Epic Light Show

The Old Stone Quarry comes alive with Color Kinetics ReachElite iColor 200 RGBA floodlights — professional-grade architectural fixtures that bathe 800 feet of limestone bluff in living color.

Four-channel RGBA LEDs deliver more than 4 billion unique hues, from candlelight ambers and sunset golds to deep cinematic blues. As darkness falls, the cliffs themselves become the show: synchronized, choreographed, and impossible to forget.
